Championship Battles Begin

The Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is hosting the World Poker Tour World Championships for the fourth time. The event, which started this week, has 606 participants and a massive prize pool of $15,25,000.

A $3.8 million prize awaits the man or woman beating out the other 605 players who have come from 40 other different countries, while 2nd through 4th place players will receive one million dollars or more individual payouts. The tournament will take place over six days.

For prestige, prizes, and media coverage, it is one of the best tournaments around, although the $25,500 buy-in fee is rather steep.

According to Steve Lipscomb, founder and CEO of WPT Enterprises, Inc., “The WPT World Championship is considered the toughest tournament in the world to win if you consider the caliber of the competitors”. Lipscomb also pointed out that: “At a cost of $25,500 to get to the table, you have to be a very accomplished poker player. You've either built a very solid bankroll or you've outlasted thousands in satellite tournaments. No doubt this final table will be a cliffhanger."

This is the fourth season for the World Poker Tour World Championships, bringing the total prize money for the 17 tournaments to $85,120,000. The tournaments, which are now airing on the Travel Channel every Wednesday night at 9 p.m., have created the 20 newest World Poker Tour Poker Millionaires.

The final table will be assembled by 4PM on April 24th and will consist of the best six players.
The new champion will emerge from those six players.

Update: April 22

By the fourth day of the championship, the number of players had already been reduced to 74, many of whom were well-known poker players.
